This occurred several years ago; but my circumstances were such that the fulfilment of the intention then formed was delayed till the present time.And now that my task is at last accomplished, I venture to give it to the press, not without misgivings about the success of my efforts. However, if the reader find many defects and shortcomings in this English version of a great work, he will be kind enough to remember that the difficulties I had to contend with were not insignificant or few.
